How to obtain a golf handicap in Australia?

In Australia, obtaining a golf handicap is a straightforward process, governed by Golf Australia (GA). Here’s how you can get one:

1. Join a Golf Australia Affiliated Club

To receive an official Golf Australia Handicap, you need to be a member of a club that is affiliated with Golf Australia. This can be a traditional golf club or an online/social club that offers handicaps.

2. Obtain a Golflink Number

Once you join an affiliated club, you’ll receive a GolfLink number. This number is used to track your scores and calculate your handicap under the World Handicap System (WHS).

3. Submit Scorecards

To establish a handicap, you must submit three 18-hole rounds (or six 9-hole rounds) played under the rules of golf at a GA-affiliated course. Your scores must be marked by a playing partner who holds a Golf Australia handicap.

4. Handicap Calculation

After submitting your initial rounds, your handicap will be calculated using the World Handicap System (WHS). Your handicap index will be adjusted as you play and submit more rounds.

5. Maintaining Your Handicap

  • Keep playing and submitting scorecards to maintain an active handicap.
  • Your handicap updates daily based on your best 8 of the last 20 rounds.
  • Check your handicap anytime via the GolfLink website (www.golf.org.au).

Alternative: Obtain a Social Golf Handicap

If you don’t want to join a traditional club, some online-based social clubs offer GA-recognised handicaps. Examples include:

This is a great option for casual players who want a handicap without a full club membership.
